Question by Beth J: Pray for Hooch: What are your ideas for helping to control the dog population in a county?
My husband and I are planning to start a No-Kill Animal Shelter this year. We have been in rescue for some time and this is the next logical step for us. We have written proposals in the past for county funding to help control the over-population of both cats and dogs. We are preparing to write another and I would like to get everyone’s ideas on what you think should be in the proposal. For example, we suggested an age limit for animals being brought to the county Animal Shelter in our last one. This was implemented so that anyone who drops off a puppy younger than 8 weeks has to leave the mother as well. What are some of your ideas that would assist in handling the over-population of dogs? These should be plans the county can implement, please.
Thank you.

Offer Free Spaying and Neutering in certain situations, focus on Publicizing low-cost spay/neuter and shot clinics.
You first have to realize that pets are property, people’s property- and its their rights at stake. You shouldn’t think of it as controlling them, because then you start to turn people away from it; but instead as informing and giving outlets.
Telling owner’s they must give up pups at a certain age will just push them to throw the animals on the streets instead of using the free services at animal control. There are already so many people that try to avoid shelters due to ignorance- why make it worse?
