The state of Virginia is in the perfect location to receive drugs traveling from New York and Miami all along the eastern seaboard. What does this mean to the drug abuse problem in the state? This means that the residents of Virginia have access to a large quantity of all kinds of illegal drugs as well as pharmaceutical drugs traveling up or down Interstate 95. As stated by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, the major drug problem in the state of Virginia is due cocaine and crack cocaine, as well as the violence that comes with trafficking this drug. Cocaine drug abuse may be the major problem in Virginia, however, Mexican trafficking organizations are not only hustling cocaine but they also great a business with methamphetamine and marijuana.
In 2005, it was reported that close to 136,000 residents of the state needed help for drug or alcohol abuse. The sad news is that the alcohol rehab centers and the drug abuse facilities only helped around 35,000 in the same year. In that year, the largest number of patients seeking help was those with alcohol abuse issues.
The Office of National Drug Control Policy reported that in 2006 that individuals admitted for treatment was at 13.9% for alcohol abuse, however, 18.8% were admitted with drug and alcohol abuse issues, with cocaine drug abuse coming in third place with 12.4%. Marijuana was the most drug abuse problem in the state of Virginia for those entering drug abuse treatmetn centers at 17.6%. These figures may have changed over the last couple of years but since the DEA sees a major problem with the trafficking of cocaine and marijuana, the figures have more than likely only increased with time.
At the time of this writing, Virginia had 196 drug and alcohol rehab centers. The state actaully owns and operates at least 70 of these facilities. The majority of drug rehab or alcohol treatment centers work with physicians and doctors to ensure those that need help with their addiction can find proper care.
The state of Virginia does have a problem with club drugs as well just like many other states across the nation. Club drugs like MDMA also known as Ecstasy is very easy to find and GHB and Ketamine are also found at nighclubs. Club drugs in Virginia also include some that may not be seen in other states including piperazines, psilocybin mushrooms, LSD, and PCP.
Prescription drug abuse cases are still a problem in Virginia with the most popular being OxyContin, Percocet, and Dilaudid. Other prescription drugs are also making it to the streets including hydromorphone, methadone, and benzodiazepines, to name a few.
Drug abuse and alcohol abuse is a growing problem in the state of Virginia, just as it is in other states across the nation. Finding help through an alcohol and drug abuse treatment center will be the first step in a changing your life for the better and controlling the addiction instead of it controlling you.
