The United States Drug Enforcement Administration states that the illegal narcotics distributed in the state of Utah are controlled by Mexican poly-drug trafficking organizations. This is the source for drugs such as methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and marijuana being brought in from California, Mexico, the southwestern states, and the Pacific northwestern United States.
Drug abuse as well as alcohol abuse is found throughout the state of Utah with several drug and alcohol rehab centers stating that the abuse of pharmaceutical drugs is on the rise. The major pharmaceutical drug abuse in the state of Utah is OxyContin with Diazepam, meperidine, and methadone on down the list. Prescription drug abuse often begins with a legal prescription but once the doctor refuses to give the patient, another subscription they find ways to purchase the pharmaceutical drug. In a report by the Utah Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Annual Report in 2008, alcohol was at the top of the drug abuse chart with cocaine including crack cocaine coming in second. Other drug abuse cases involved marijuana, heroin, other opiates/synthetics, hallucinogens, methamphetamine, other stimulants, benzodiazepines, tranquilizers, inhalants, oxycodone, club drugs, and over the counter.
