The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration states that Hawaii has a prime location for all types of drugs to be delivered through drug trafficking. Hawaii is made up of eight islands and a 1,500-mile of islets. Hawaii has a large population, which creates a diverse group of ethnicities. The Hawaii District Office has an Area of Responsibility that where most of the state’s drugs are smuggled in through. Most drugs make their way into Hawaii by U.S. Postal Mail Service, airline cargo and shipping companies plus the overwhelming amount of visitors to Hawaii each year.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse lists cocaine, heroin, and marijuana at the top of the drug lists. The ones that most families forget about or do not even think about are prescription drugs or over the counter drugs. In Hawaii Hydrocodone is one of the highest used pharmaceutical drugs in the state. Its easy access from multiple doctor visits and internet shopping makes it highly sought after. A scary fact about over the counter medications is that home made methamphetamines, or meth, can be constructed with ephedrine purchased directly from a local pharmacy. Many teens are addicted to prescription drugs they find in their medicine cabinet at home, which is a very alarming drug abuse problem that many parents do not recognize.
The peaceful serenity of Hawaii has become the leader in its production of top-notch marijuana. The drug is easily accessible and widely used leading it to take its second place spot as Hawaii’s most used drug. The tropical climate there is ideal for proper growth of the drug. Heroin is found in Hawaii in illegal gambling sites where veterans reside, which is normally smuggled in through Mexico. Black tar heroin is the most popular and can be mixed with marijuana. Also mixed with marijuana is cocaine, which is smuggled in by Ziploc baggie through airports and postal service. Some cocaine is reserved for turn around into crack cocaine by local drug dealers.
The most heavily abused drug of choice in Hawaii is crystal meth. It is delivered by powder form from Mexican ties and then converted into the crystal ice form. The drug has wreaked unbelievable havoc on the communities and families in Hawaii. It has caused not only devastating substance abuse, but also violent crimes and an unstoppable distribution throughout the clubs and street corners. There are other club type drugs distributed at raves and clubs in Hawaii. Ecstasy and LSD are handed out almost routinely to teenagers, young adults and to the stationed military personal. All of these are considered a huge drug abuse problem in the state.
Substance abuse leads it users done a lonely path to drug rehab. The graph above shows an alarming increase in the drinking of alcohol by teenagers still in high school. The rates are higher than those in the US and these young adults are not only drinking alcohol, but combining it with other illicit drugs and ending up in drug and alcohol programs.
Small amounts of marijuana for medical purposes are okay in Hawaii. The state wants its users to receive treatment for drug and alcohol abuse instead of jail time. There is help available and sobriety is just a phone call away.
