The graph above depicts the amount of methamphetamine that was produced within a homemade lab over a span of a few years. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has Arizona linked to one of the top distribution sites and for good reason. The state is full of mountain ranges and deserts, making certain areas an ideal spot for drug dealers to traffic their substances. These areas are often not stationed with law enforcement officers and the population there is small too.
The location of Arizona puts its deathly close to a major drug trafficking industry. The Mexican state of Sonora is where drugs can easily be transported from Mexico directly into Arizona. Sonora has succumbed to a reputation for the violence that can occur when drugs are being transported form one place to another.
A high production of methamphetamine has lead Arizona to the top of the pack for substance abuse. This drug is produced locally as well as through Mexican drug trafficking. Local labs have been on a steady decline for years, but the drug is still being produced and moved around Arizona and into other parts of the US.
Meth is not the only drug that is on the rise and on the go in Arizona. Heroin, cocaine, and the easily accessible marijuana are all available throughout the state. Black tar heroin is smuggled in through the Mexico/Arizona border and is highly distributed in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. A form of heroin known as “cheese” is being made for distribution to young, school age children. Phoenix and Tucson are the top two areas for cocaine use and distribution. Again, Tucson and Phoenix are the areas of interest for trafficking on marijuana through people who are paid to smuggle it in within a backpack.
Prescription drugs are widely used in the Arizona area too. Oxycontin, Vicodin, Percocet, Lortab, and many others are highly sought after in this area. Substance abuse does include those drugs that are commonly not associated with people who seek drug rehab centers. Unfortunately, this myth is becoming more true day by day. Even the internet is getting involved by having prescription pills delivered directly to your home, without a doctor’s prescriptions.
Drug and alcohol programs are what the National Institute on Drug Abuse is wanting for substance abusers in all states. The state of Arizona has over 20 drug and alcohol treatment and recovery centers. Patients can get better and stay clean while living in a treatment center with no judgment. Drug rehabs are available for inpatient and outpatient stays with treatment centers that fit every budget.
Each addiction has to be treated individually to achieve success and sobriety. Substance abuse can include cocaine, heroin, marijuana, club drugs, like Ecstasy, and even alcohol. There is no shame in seeking help for your addiction. Most families are unaware that there is even a problem, so a treatment center may offer family services as well as individual treatment.
Every person involved should seek help, regardless if they are abusing drugs or not.
